The big Maple tree this came from is still alive and well. A massive limb blew down in a storm and yielded wood for several drums. (Waterloo,WI) The finish is hand rubbed tung oil. After applying several coats and allowing them to dry, I rub off what remains on the surface, (and repeat) leaving a silky smooth satin finish that can't chip or peel. I re-oiled it to give it a light gloss. Keep it fresh with some lemon oil, or a commercial preparation for oil finished woods.
Red Elm - SOLD
Red Elm - SOLD

It is so much easier to hold onto a drum that is this height, it's a really nice sized drum. Not too big, and certainly not too small. At only 11 1/2 pounds, it is easy to sit with or carry. This whole drum is silky smooth and has gentle sensuous curves. It's made from a single piece of Red Elm wood and I gave it a wash of white stain to accent the wild wood grain. The bass is short and fast. It is a quick thump and does not hang on long. This is better for recording and group playing, but not if you like huge ka-whumping bass, take a look at the monster drums. This baby was made intentionally for the high notes. It has a thicker skin and many shape details to give it super loud slaps and pops. This is tuned up real tight, and it needs that to get  the wild sound. If you choose this drum, don't worry about what it sounds like tuned down, It was made to be cranked up and be explosive. That IS this drums life purpose.  Sharp biting barks and great clarity between the high slaps and mid range tones.
Dark Red Elm - SOLD
Dark Red Elm - SOLD

This drum is made from a single piece of Red Elm wood with a rich dark red color dyed on the outside. Elm wood takes color very well and it shows off the beautiful grain patterns.

Overall this is a loud and commanding drum to play. It has crisp high notes and a resounding bass with good hang time.

It has a stout body and with its medium-thick skin is suitable for that Solo style sound. The top edge is well rounded, and I used more parts of rope to get that super high tension, and hold it.

This whole drum is silky smooth and has smooth sweeping curves. The bottom edge is well rounded is wont crack or chip.

The skin on top is African goat skin with black and grey fur with a flap.

All of my drums come with a built-in carry handle on one side which makes it easy to tote around and aids greatly when you want to take your drum out of its bag.

WOOD: Gray and Red Elm. These are tough trees, with a lightish wood ranging from nearly white to rich light brown color. This wood has an interlocking grain that makes it very tough to split for fire wood. This was used in the old days for ox cart wheels. Both red and gray have very striking grain patterns, and take to staining very well. I will often dye Gray Elm into a thick burgundy color, or as my web administrator had requested, washed in white. Quite stunning. Tough to work with, but worth the extra time.  This stuff is tough!

This wood feels silky smooth and is wonderful to touch. I have rubbed on layer after layer of lacquer, and after applying several coats and allowing them to dry, I rub off what remains on the surface, and then apply a final  glossy coat.          You can keep it beautiful by rubbing with some lemon oil occasionally.

WE TAKE CARE OF YOUR HANDS: No one likes hurt, swollen hands, so I slowly and carefully smooth the curves of each drum to make them supremely comfortable to play.
DogStar Drums are made to play for hours with no pain.

Feel lighter, carry LESS weight! I spend a lot of time carefully trimming off excess bulk so you can have fantastic sound at half the weight. Using a lathe, I have much more control over the shell thickness. Thicker just where it needs it, not all over.

Musicians demand superb sound from their instruments, and every DogStarDrum is carefully shaped and tuned to give you that exceptional sound while also showing the beautiful natural wood grain and color.

This baby is tall and slim. Small size but big sound. It's made from a single piece of Black Walnut wood with its natural dark chocolate color. When I go out to drum, I always take a large one and a small one. I like to change up my sounds. This size drum is so effortless to play. Just a touch and it barks. It is good to give your hands a rest now and then. This one is perfect for that, as well as adding intense accents to your music. When I made it, I wanted this drum to be capable of the intensely sharp slaps of the Guinea style drums, so I left an extra thickness of wood in the critical places. The I gave it a slightly thicker spotted skin and made it real tight. This is very crisp sounding with sharp pops and slaps, and a booming bass that rings out for a long time. The bass is not ultra low like the bigger drums, but is a bit higher pitch and will fill your house. Many of my students play drums this size, and when they stop, there is a strange emptiness. It's weird. It seems like only drums of this size can make that particular and awesome sound.   It is tuned up pretty tight and it is easy to do great finger rolls and sharp pops.
